First of all, I would like to mention that it’s great sadness to see some young European people participating in terrorist organizations in the Middle East. It is worth-pondering what encourages them to join the terrorist activities over there. I think the western public opinions seem that they do not making effort to understand the problem behind the reasons of why some people join the terrorist organizations. There are many terrorist networks and cells. Do we know why these young people mostly prefer to join the terrorist networks in the Middle East instead of anywhere in the world? In particular, the recent participations of some young men and particularly women in terrorist organizations worth notice. Reading the statements in some interviews, it is obvious that romantic feelings and dreams used by the terrorist organizations are influencing in the Middle East.
For instance, an article regarding a participation in PKK/YPG terrorist activities published in The Guardian on 19 March 2018, put forward many important and interesting determinations as mentioned below;
‘‘…(…) completed the YPJ’s mandatory month-long military training course, in which new recruits learn basic Kurdish, weaponry and battlefield tactics on top of a crash course in the egalitarian and feminist ideology of the YPG/J, and was assigned to an infantry division…’’
I know some western countries have been claiming that YPG is not a terrorist organization for a long time. Furthermore US, a member of NATO, supports YPG/PKK against ISIS although NATO refers to PKK as a terrorist entity of which main target is Turkey. But, as a matter of fact, there are many adequate information indicating YPG is the other version of PKK terrorist organization in Syria. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on 24 July 2015, a member of YPG/PKK whose name’s Zind Ruken obviously stated the connection between YPG and PKK as follows;
“…Sometimes I’m a PKK, sometimes I’m a PJAK, sometimes I’m a YPG. It doesn’t really matter. They are all members of the PKK...”
Some people may still claim that YPG is not PKK terrorist organization. This allegation doesn’t change the reality.
This subjective discussion is dealt entirely with the motivation reasons behind people’s participation in the clash activities in the Middle East. I suppose it is a difficult problem to explain the hypothetic relation between ‘‘…weaponry and battlefield tactics…’’ and ‘‘…the egalitarian and feminist ideology…’’ as expressed above. I think the vital point of this matter is this problem. Whether it is admitted or not that PKK/YPG is terrorist organization, I suppose the western public opinions mostly agree that the ‘romance’ of foreigners going to fight in other people’s conflicts is misguided. But as the situation lasts, it’s seen that the terrorist organization attributes their clashing theory to egalitarian and feminist ideology to encourage some of young European people. I suppose this is one of the most important reasons why some young European women particularly joined the terrorist activities in the Middle East.
On the other hand, another view indicating how to prevent some European people joining ISIS terrorist organization on the western medias made some important points. The key roles of social media, families and female radicalisation are the significant determinations for the young members of ISIS terrorist network. But I think these reasons may also assist to explain the hypothetic puzzle stated by the PKK/YPG terrorist organization as stated above. It should be taken into consideration that they use the same processes although aims of the terrorists are different. In fact, we should primarily think why these young people prefer to come fight in the Middle East in desire of creating an egalitarian world. If the main reason is to create an egalitarian society in the Middle East, they should particularly query and examine the targets and the perspectives of the oil companies and relevant states. Then they will understand what kind of a dirty battle is present. If the objective is to create an egalitarian life around the world, the Middle East may be wrong preference to be the initial starting point to struggle. Egalitarian means supporting or following the idea that all people are equal and should have the same rights and opportunities, and it does not mean fighting. The contributions to settlement of disputes and to create a new world do not mean to join the terrorist organizations. The peaceful approaches must be center of gravity for egalitarian context.
Nevertheless, second argument used by the terrorists is the feminism. I am not a feminism expert. But, I know that feminist movements include women's rights such as the right to vote, to hold public office, work, equal pay, own property, receive education, enter into contracts, have equal rights within marriage, and have maternity leave, etc. We can obviously see that fighting or killing anyone is a dilemma when we think the objectives of feminism. On the other hand, it is very interesting how these young women can be identified as activists. If this determination is true, then we should discuss meaning of activism. Activism consists of efforts to affect or to direct social, political, economic, or environmental reform with the desire to make improvements in society such as to write letters to carry out campaign, to do boycotts and strikes, to sing street marches, or sit-ins, and hunger strikes. So, we can never identify them as activists as long as they are in ‘‘…infantry division…’’
Finally, it is unfortunately seen that so-called grassroots feminist and socialist revolution has become unrealistic qualification with use of strange processes. When it is considered the concepts and hypothetical constructs among the sloganist statements, I believe it will be understood how the romance of foreigners are exploited by the dark organizations in the Middle East in order to influence the western public opinions in their favour. This tragicomic issue must be stopped immediately. The joining terrorist organizations must be clarified and blocked in all their parts. The peak of the female radicalisation shouldn’t turn into becoming a soldier in ‘‘…infantry division…’’
